Memorial Day 2023

This is late, but the sentiment is forever in our hearts:

We honor those who gave their all…

On Memorial Day we remember those who gave all they could for our freedoms:

Soldier, rest! Thy warfare o'er,
Sleep the sleep that knows not breaking,
Dream of battled fields no more.
Days of danger, nights of waking.

-Sir Walter Scott

On Memorial Day, we hope you took some take time to pay respect to the men and woman who fought and died for the possibility of peace. If you know a veteran, especially one who has recently returned from deployment, take a moment to thank them for their service.

To those of you who have served or are currently serving, thank you!

Always enjoy family and friends with special significance and especially... enjoy your freedom.

In honor and respect,
San Mateo County Republican Party.

Memorial Day reminds us of our duties toward the wounded soldiers still with us and the bereaved families, orphans, and widows of the fallen soldiers. We honor their sacred remains and show our gratitude in the following ways:

  • Adorning the graves of the soldiers with flags or flowers.

  • Visiting cemeteries and memorials.

  • Furling the American Flag at half-mast until noon.

  • Furling the 'POW/MIA Flag' at half-mast until noon.

  • Observe 1 minute of silence at 3 p.m., 'National Moment of Remembrance' and listen to Taps being played.

  • Take a pledge to aid the disabled veterans, widows, widowers, and orphans of fallen soldiers... and keep it.

  • You may support the efforts to restore the traditional day of observance of Memorial Day back to May 30th.

  • Offer thanks to those veterans still with us to show appreciation of their sacrifices, or to the families and relatives of the bereaved families.

IT IS THE SOLDIER

It is the Soldier, not the minister
Who has given us freedom of religion.

It is the Soldier, not the reporter
Who has given us freedom of the press.

It is the Soldier, not the poet
Who has given us freedom of speech.

It is the Soldier, not the campus organizer
Who has given us freedom to protest.

It is the Soldier, not the lawyer
Who has given us the right to a fair trial.

It is the Soldier, not the politician
Who has given us the right to vote.

It is the Soldier who salutes the flag,
Who serves beneath the flag,
And whose coffin is draped by the flag,
Who allows the protester to burn the flag.
