Election Protection

The Election protection Group maintains a year round relationship with the staff at the San Mateo County Elections Office including the Assistant Registrar of Voters. The goal is to work together with staff to improve confidence in our elections.

The way we do that is by observing, monitoring and participating in elections as well as learning how elections work. We encourage citizens to get jobs at the election office to get an up close and personal look at how things are done. We arrange presentations by staff to help us understand the election processes and then we observe to make sure proper procedures are followed. Finally our job is to let staff know what voters are concerned about and offer suggestions for how to improve our election experiences.

We are lucky here in San Mateo County because we have an Elections Office staff that is willing to work with us, answers a multitude of questions and that runs elections well. But we need to continue to learn, show up and engage to demonstrate our on going committment to fair elections. In other words we need You to volunteer to continue the work of the Election Protection Group. As a side benefit you'll meet and collaborate with like minded people and, most importantly, you'll be making a difference for the good of our county and the country.

Please sign up today and invite friends and family to join you.

Observations

Conclusions

  • San Mateo County Election Office Staff did a good job running the Recall Election. A 1% Audit of the Recall Election was a success, meaning that the hand and machine ballot counts matched.

  • Our main concerns going forward are Signature Verification, Ballot Harvesting, and Voting Machines. None of these can be changed on the county level or local level, but we can make our concerns known. We’ll be communicating with the Assistant Registrar of Voters about our observations and suggestions.

  • We are sure that Election Observation is important for us and for the Election Office Staff.

  • We got to know some of the staff members and saw how seriously they take their jobs We hope to work with the staff to find ways to improve the observation experience and we’ll continue to educate voters and raise their confidence level in the system.
